Kagera extension officers, regional secretariat benefit from Climate change and Climate Smart Agriculture training programme.
Right from inception, the project unleashes an increased understanding of climate change and climate-smart solutions. Thanks to the Climate Smart Agriculture Training Programme led by REPOA which was effectively introduced to key stakeholders at a three-day inception and planning workshop held on the 24th of May 2022 at the Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS)’ office in Kagera.
The workshop was built upon key findings of the earlier scoping mission and consultations carried out by REPOA, as well as recommendations from the Kagera RAS office and scoping participants.
Moreover, the workshop among others contributed to an enhanced understanding of short- and long-term effects of climate change and variability, including the understanding of practices and technologies involved in undertaking Climate Smart Agriculture.
While closing the session for the inception and planning meeting, Kagera Regional Administrative Assistant for Economic and Productive Sectors, Mr. Isaya Tendega thanked REPOA for supporting Kagera region to create awareness and build the capacity of the officers from the Regional and LGAs level on climate change and Climate-Smart Agriculture.
After discussions with key stakeholders from the Regional and Local government level, representative of private sector entities and Civil Society Organizations, there was a consensus that about 500 citizens, government leaders, politicians and civil society organization from 27 Divisions in the 8 LGAs will be trained on climate change and localized CSA practices and technologies.
This programme was also built on gender-based capacity amongst farmers, livestock keepers, fisher folk and agripreneurs and their local support institutions by capacitating 16 Lead Facilitators – Training of Trainers (TOTs) who will in turn train 162 Division Community Facilitators (DCFs) (6 from each Division, 3 women and 3 men) from the eight Local Government Authorities to conduct training in Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA).
Earlier in February 2022, REPOA conducted a scoping study in the eight District Councils of Biharamulo DC, Bukoba DC, Bukoba MC, Karagwe DC, Kyerwa DC, Missenyi DC, Muleba DC, and Ngara DC in the Kagera region. The scoping study aimed at understanding how Private Sector Enterprises led by women and youth, operate in the space of sustainable food systems and climate change. The scoping mission explored the nature of women-led SMEs, roles in broader agricultural value chains, and the effect of climate change on their operations. Central to challenges facing women-enterprises, are capacity gaps in their understanding and responses to effects of climate variability on livelihoods.
